Mathematics Department

Math placement is based on the results of an exam given during the first few days of school. Middle school students are able to take high school math classes if they show exceptional mathematical ability.

General MatH

Concentration on operations with whole numbers, fractions, percentages, integers, ratios and proportions, square roots, scientific notation, basic geometry, basic probability and statistics, measurement and graphing of data.

Pre-Algebra

Review of arithmetic operations, estimating, measurement and topics from geometry. Introduces the basic axioms of algebra, solving linear equations and proportions, solving equations with one or more variables, model and describe patterns and functions, operations with monomials.

Algebra

Covers sets, operations with polynomials, second degree equalities in one variable, perfect cubes, fourth degree trinomials, solving multivariable equations, graphing linear equations and inequalities, radicals and exponents.

Applied Math

Survey course covering the application of math concepts to simple and complex problem solving. Problems used extend from everyday life applications to simple science applications.

Science Department

All science classes actively involve students in scientific investigations, use of the scientific method to develop a rational and objective framework for solving problems, and a project oriented approach to scientific inquiry.

Life Science

Students understand the characteristics of living things, the diversity of life and how organisms change over time in terms of biological adaptation and genetics. Students understand the interrelationships of matter and energy in living organisms and the interactions of living organisms with their environment. Laboratory work will include dissections.

Earth-Space-Physical Science

Students understand the composition, formative processes, and history of the Earth, the solar system and the universe. Students will study the nature of matter and energy including their forms, the changes they undergo and their interactions. Lecture and hands on laboratory work included.

Science Project

Lab based science course to teach the application of the scientific method and inquiry process through hands on laboratory experimentation. Projects are chosen to illustrate the interrelationship between science and technology.

Language Arts Department

All students are required to take Literature and Composition as two separate classes.

Literature

Students are introduced to terminology, methods and objectives of the study of literature. Literary types used include short stories, poetry, essays, novels and plays. Reading comprehension and vocabulary development are incorporated into the program of study.
